Education within reach of countryside youth
I assumed the commitment of accompanying girls and adolescents in the project “Promocion de la mujer” (“Woman promotion”) of the Dominican Missionary Sisters of the Rosary in the Boarding School Santa Rosa in San Ignacio, Cajamarca, because we value countryside girls’ education, since the importance it has for their development in relation to all the dangers that they face.
I arrived at the boarding school on March 10th, a week before the beginning of this year’s classes. I was full of enthusiasm preparing and organizing the house for the arrival and reception of girls and adolescents who their parents trust in the sisters and lay women. They have a vacancy in different national schools of San Ignacio, and they can study their secondary school there since there are no schools or they are too far away from their villages for going by walking.
We had scheduled the first meeting with parents that was attended by few parents because of the suspension of classes due to covid-19, by which we had to maintain social distance to avoid contagion of this sad disease.
I came back to Piura to spend the quarantine with my family, a time for reflecting about all the changes that have been made. I think about the girls who have a different reality and have no access to online education because they have no electricity in their villages and few of them have access to classes on tv.
Waiting for the situation to improve in our country in terms of health and education.
