The Missionary Dominican Sisters in Basilan, Philippines Through the Years

Dominican Sisters are no strangers to the province of Basilan and its people. They have been a presence in this island province long before my time. Their legacy echoes through the stories of my cousins, aunties, neighbors, and friends. My cousins often reminisce about Sister Roy, Sister Jeng, Sister Pely, and many others. They are known for their compassion and understanding, qualities frequently highlighted in the stories shared.

My own encounter with the Dominican Sisters occurred in 2015 when I assumed the role of Parish Youth Leader. Sister Mary Ann Barcelona oversaw our Youth Choir, and it was through her that I was introduced to Sister Rosa Angeles, the vocation directress of the congregation. Following a morning Mass, they graciously invited me for breakfast, where we engaged in enriching conversations about the Congregation and its Founders. During that breakfast, something ignited within me—a spark that gradually transformed into a blazing passion. From that moment on, I found myself drawn closer to their work.

Over the years, I had the privilege of collaborating with the Sisters in various capacities. They spearheaded initiatives for youth, children, families, and scholarships, enabling countless individuals to pursue their dreams and complete their education. Many of the youth and children they supported have now become professionals excelling in their respective fields. Together with the youth, I assisted Sister Ligaya Mariano, OP in her apostolate in Catechetical Ministry, Sister Leonarda Abejero, OP in Diocesan Youth Ministry, Sister Pely Virtudazo, OP in Family Life Ministry, and later, Sister Vanesa Alanano, OP in Youth Ministry. Currently, with Sister Nini Rebollos, OP with who am working as the Social Worker of SOLIDARIDAD – IDP Foundation Inc. an NGO which is the social arm of the Prelature of Isabela de Basilan.

Moreover, the Sisters served as sources of inspiration for numerous young women in our Youth Ministry, encouraging them to explore the beauty of the consecrated life. They facilitated visits to Baliwasan and Culianan, offering firsthand experiences of religious life. Additionally, the Sisters instilled invaluable values in me, ones that I continue to uphold to this day. Their guidance, unwavering support, and prayers have played pivotal roles in my personal and spiritual development.
